Arlen: Yeah, there definitely are models like that. And I've dealt with a lot of different customers of our that are in the organic food space actually. And this is something, I don't know if it's something that's customary in that space that are selling organic super foods and a variety of different, kind of niche products that they have a distinctive presence online.
Take the email below from Paperless Post, for example. I love the header of this email: It provides a clear CTA that includes a sense of urgency. Then, the subheader asks a question that forces recipients to think to themselves, "Wait, when is Mother's Day again? Did I buy Mom a card?" Below this copy, the simple grid design is both easy to scan and quite visually appealing. Each card picture is a CTA in and of itself -- click on any one of them, and you'll be taken to a purchase page.
If you are starting from scratch with a brand new product, you may have to guess at what the marketing cost per customer should be. For an established product, you can take historical data and arrive at acceptable marketing costs for each acquired customer. Either way the total cost of marketing involved in the acquisition of a single customer is the sum of all marketing dollars spent acquiring the customer.
While this might seem surprising at first, think about your own online behavior: When you sign up for a website (like an online store), you have to enter your email address to create the account. You even need an email address to create a Facebook or Twitter account. What’s more, Facebook and Twitter email to notify users of activity, like when someone is tagged in a photo.
This may have sparked your interest, but it may also sound really complicated. You might be wondering how these magical affiliate links get created or who handles the payouts when an affiliate earns commission. There are companies out there, such as CJ Affiliate by Conversant or LinkConnector, that serve as affiliate networks. The merchant can post their offers in the network (for example: what they are willing to pay per conversion), and that merchant uploads graphic assets and other links that the affiliate can simply embed into their website on sidebars, blog posts, text links, and so on.

Do you have someone on your team to oversee this initiative by forming relationships with publishers, handling disputes, troubleshooting technical problems, and making sure that payments are sent on time? Do the anticipated returns justify the invested time?
At the beginning, Murphy created her own affiliate program in house. She found that this process was a major time sink — she had to take the time to constantly monitor her program and remember to pay affiliates regularly. She made the jump on an affiliate network, where she could immediately access tracking, reporting, and payment systems (as well as instant access to affiliates who were more-than-ready to help sell her products).

Lets talks about what’s not a competitive advantage. Discovering a hot offer, niche, or traffic source before anyone else does. There are thousands of affiliates out there. If it’s making money then others will find out sooner or later. You can’t have a profitable campaign and just cross your fingers hoping no one sees it. You have to take action and build a moat around it.
The way SAN operates is pretty similar to other high-ticket membership products like Digital Altitude (that one was shut down by the FTC for fraud), AWOL Academy, Mobe, etc. Overpriced and designed to make as much money as they can from their members. They keep pushing their members to upgrade their memberships and buy the next level/product. At the same time, they tell you that this is the way to earn money online. Making money online has nothing to do with buying levels. It has to do with working hard and offering solutions to your audience problems.
Historically, it has been difficult to measure the effectiveness of marketing campaigns because target markets cannot be adequately defined. Email marketing carries the benefit of allowing marketers to identify returns on investment and measure and improve efficiency. Email marketing allows marketers to see feedback from users in real time, and to monitor how effective their campaign is in achieving market penetration, revealing a communication channel's scope. At the same time, however, it also means that the more personal nature of certain advertising methods, such as television advertisements, cannot be captured.
An additional note that must be made at this phase is: do keep in mind the LTV or the life-time value of your customer here. In certain scenarios (e.g.: subscription-oriented affiliate programs) it makes sense paying significantly higher commissions on the customer’s initial payment to the company when the latter knows that they will make much more (from the same customer) on future payments. Take the time to go through the various categories or search for specific merchants that you think would do well on your site. There’s no set of rules for filtering through the options; you’ll ultimately need to rely upon your familiarity with your audience and your gut feelings about what types of offers will perform.
