Creating a unique tracking ID for an Amazon link is easy. Simply log in to your Amazon affiliate dashboard, click “Account Settings” at the very top on the right, then click “Manage Tracking IDs”. Online advertising started to take shape – Cost Per Mille (CPM) models and paid placements were important components of the marketing mix, but difficult to measure. An emphasis on quality traffic and conversion helped transition marketers from buying impressions and site visitors, to paying exclusively for traffic that resulted in a sale and affiliate marketing lead the charge.
The main difference between referral and affiliate marketing programs is that a referral program is a program where you're structuring it for your customers to refer people they know and an affiliate program is structured for people that have not used your product or service themselves to promote it to people they don't know in exchange for a commission.

This ensures that no matter whose product or service they are selling, they will always be selling something that can interest their audience.

This doesn’t mean you only sell one product. This means you build out a brand by selling varying yet adjacent products. Over time, your consumer network might consider you a go-to for which type of vacuum they should buy. Additionally, some industries pay more than others. Especially if the product is a harder sell, affiliates may get a higher cut than they would for a product in higher demand.

Though the specifics of payout arrangements can vary a bit, in general affiliate payments will be significantly larger than the revenue generated from a click under a CPC pricing arrangement (or the effective CPC under a CPM arrangement). For high margin products such as e-books, for which there are no material costs, affiliate margins can be as 50% of the total purchase price. So it’s not unheard of for affiliates to generate $100 or much more from each referral.
Although other affiliate training manuals have some strong points (and I do recommend one as a companion to the Super Affiliate Handbook), most affiliate marketing training manuals currently sold are either seriously out-of-date; fail to teach valuable site and traffic-building techniques (such as blogging) or completely bypass essential marketing methods. Furthermore, one of those that fails to teach the basics is also ridiculously expensive.

When do you want to get started? If you are just starting and have no audience then some of the programs may not accept your application to become an affiliate, while others will let you get set up in minutes. If you want to get started straight away then make sure you’re applying for programs that are less restrictive. Generally the larger, network style places will enable you to get going quickly while specific niche programs may require you to have a certain audience size or characteristics.

If you have identified merchants for whom you think you could generate substantial revenue through an affiliate marketing relationship, there’s no reason not to attempt to set up a direct relationship. There’s also not much magic to pursuing this type of arrangement; if there isn’t a pre-existing relationship, start by reaching out to your potential partner and telling them a bit about your site.

What the chart above doesn’t show is the role of the affiliate marketing network (e.g., Commission Junction or LinkShare).
