Of course, this is a generalization, and there are some programs that have made themselves exceptions to the rule. For example, I’ve seen many affiliate programs that offer low commission rates on products that are worth very little. I’ve also seen a few programs with items priced into the hundreds or thousands of dollars that offer commission rates of 20-30%.
If you are starting from scratch with a brand new product, you may have to guess at what the marketing cost per customer should be. For an established product, you can take historical data and arrive at acceptable marketing costs for each acquired customer. Either way the total cost of marketing involved in the acquisition of a single customer is the sum of all marketing dollars spent acquiring the customer.
For sites looking to monetize their existing traffic through affiliate marketing, a major determinant of success is picking the right offers to run. The difference in earnings from a bad offer and a good one can be enormous. Unfortunately, finding the “right” offer isn’t exactly easy; if you’re using an affiliate marketing network such as Commission Junction (now part of Conversant), SharesASale, or LinkShare, you will have literally thousands of affiliate offers available to you.

Significant emphasis must be put on quality partnership building. It may be tempting to let as many partners into your program as possible, however, leads should be evaluated for quality, not volume. You want to avoid running into the issue of letting just anyone into your lead gen campaign and then discover that their efforts aren’t brand-aligned or delivering the types of leads you want. Focusing on volume over quality negatively impacts two things: the experience your affiliates have and the conversion rate of your program.Having a few partners in your lead generation-focused affiliate program who drive high-value traffic at a steady volume is much better than dealing with fraudulent lead issues among partners each month.

Solo ads are a form of advertisement where emails are sent out to an email subscriber list. Of course, this costs money and it is not the most efficient way to promote a product. You can’t know in advance how many of the emails will be opened and many times these email lists are low-quality. You are also not the only one sending emails to that list. Pay per lead is attractive because the bar is set low. Getting a person to sign up for something is more feasible than getting someone to make a purchase. Many CPA programs have secondary payout tiers for leads that become customers, which is advantageous. PPL programs are helpful during slow periods and commission droughts (droughts happen to the best of us). On the other hand, because the trigger event is less demanding than a sale, pay per lead programs typically pay low amounts, for example, $0.01 per lead. Also, focusing exclusively on PPL programs will not lead to making thousands monthly.

Especially if the product is a harder sell, affiliates may get a higher cut than they would for a product in higher demand.
